Manual Lymph Drainage

(Myo Functional MLD)

What is manual lymph drainage?

Manual lymph drainage is a very gentle hands on technique. Similar to myofascial release therapy it does not require the use of oils. The aim is to help the body's lymphatic system functions well. The technique is soothing and rhythmic following the natural flow of lymph fluid in the body.

Our lymphatic system has many functions, but the primary ones are fluid balance and waste removal.

When our lymphatic system is out of whack we can experience fluid build up puffiness and swelling.

The lymphatic system filters out toxins, any cell debris and is also vital for our immune systems, acting on any nasties, such as bacteria that could potentially cause illness.

Both of the above functions mean it is particularly effective at promoting healing. So can be a good thing to pursue following illness, if you are generally feeling run down or pre and post surgery.

The bonus factor is the rhythmic nature of the technique is highly relaxing. It helps calm the nervous system and often my clients report having a great night's sleep following a session.

Improving lymph flow can also potentially help ease the feeling of joint stiffness and pain. It can be helpful for chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and even migraines and recurrent headaches.

Kathy has had advanced training in providing Manual Lymph Drainage for people who have had lymph node removal e.g due to mastectomy and for conditions, such a secondary lymphedema and lipoedema. This includes knowledge of techniques, such as lymph taping, lymph cupping and self management advice. She may use aspects of myofascial release therapy and scar release, for areas of scaring, radiation or fibrosis. Kathy provides services that compliment the medical management of Lymphedema, does not diagnose lymphoedema and recommends that clients are monitored via the public lymphoedema service.
